Press Pass SE Game Day Gear Jerseys #KK - Kevin Kolb

Kevin Kolb has been traded to the Arizona Cardinals.

Congratulations! Let's hope Kevin takes advantage of this opportunity. It would be so great to see him succeed. I'd love for him to have success personally, but as a UH alum, I love see Coogs succeed at the highest levels. I'd especially like to see a UH quarterback break through.

On a personal note: as a lifelong Dallas Cowboys fan, it really hurt me to cheer for him as an Eagle. For most of my life, the Cardinals were in the Cowboys division, but they were never hated rivals like the Redskins or Eagles. BTW: I still have trouble with Arizona Cardinals. It should be St. Louis (not the Rams) although some older fans might still think Chicago.

It will be great to seek him back in red and white. In honor of that, here are some cards featuring Kolb in his Houston red and white. These cards are 2007 Press Pass SE Game Day Gear Jersey cards #KK. There are five variations: Silver, Gold, Holofoil, Holofoil Platinum, and Autographed (not pictured).

For my Coogfan buddies, don't you love the blue uniform trim on the Holofoil cards? ;-)

2007 Sweet Spot Pigskin Signatures Dual #KS Kevin Kolb

Sometimes the concept of a card sounds great, but the card fails miserably. The 2007 Sweet Spot Pigskin Signatures Dual #KS featuring Kevin Kolb falls into that category.

The concept is great. Two highly drafted rookie quarterbacks. Both of their autographs on a piece of a football. Pictures of both players. Only 50 copies of the card. That sounds wonderful.

But just look at this. The pictures look fine. The pigskin background looks good. But the autographs... What should be and is the focal point of the card looks horrible. The autographs are completely illegible. Some players have bad autographs in general, but that is not the problem here. Generally Kolb's signature is very stylized, but it is usually legible. In this case, the texture of the football makes both signatures unrecognizable scratches of silver.

Good concept. Disappointing card.

2009 Topps Magic #86 Kevin Kolb

2009 Kevin Kolb football cards are here. One of the best looking sets I've seen so far is the Topps Magic set.

Topps Magic continues the card industry trend of copying vintage card designs. In this case, the set is patterned after the 1951 Topps Magic set. The set features players in their college uniforms, just like the 1951 set. As usual, I give bonus points for Cougars in their UH uniforms.

There are four variations, the base card which is standard sized, the autographed card, the mini card (not pictured) which is the size of the original Magic cards, and the black bordered mini card.

Donnie Avery is also featured in this set.

2007 SAGE DECADEnce #23 Kevin Kolb

Since SAGE does not have an NFL license, it focuses on draft picks and college players. They've released the first 2009 football product with SAGE Hit. Unfortunately I don't see any University of Houston players on the list. The good news is that most of the impact players for the Cougars last year were Freshmen and Sophomores so hopefully that means a good season next year and more draft picks in the future.

In 2007 Kevin Kolb was featured in SAGE's DECADEnce set on card #23. The front of this card is absolutely beautiful. Kolb is featured in a closeup picture preparing to throw the ball. Major bonus points as usual for a player in his Houston uniform. The red uniform really stands out against the shadowed background, especially against the green field. The yard line markers provide a nice graphical element to complete the background.

The back, on the other hand, leaves alot to be desired. The same shadowed field and stadium from the background on the front of the card is used. That's actually not a horrible backdrop for the text. The disappointment to me is the stats provided. I LOVE stats, but this card provides NFL pre-season stats. Who cares about pre-season stats? College stats would have been much more informative, especially in a brand that focuses on college players in college uniforms.

Overall though, a very attractive card for the Cougar collector.

2007 Leaf Certified Materials Mirror Emerald Materials #220 Kevin Kolb

I'm not one to get excited because a card is the rarest, most expensive card out there. I can get very excited about a base card worth basically nothing especially when it has a great picture of a player in his University of Houston uniform. With that said, I still love to go on eBay and sort by price.

Today's card is the most expensive Kevin Kolb card currently on eBay requesting $360. It is the 2007 Leaf Certified Materials Mirror Emerald Materials #220. This card is very cool. It has a head and shoulders shot of Kolb in his Eagles uniform. It also has Kevin's autograph.

The most interesting thing on the card is the materials. The materials are event used. We've discussed previously the difference between event and game used relics so we don't need to cover that again. The variety of materials on this card exceeds the normal relic card. You have the normal jersey piece, but you also have a piece from a shoe, helmet, and football. The different materials provides a unique texture and look that most cards don't have.

Only 5 of these were made and the price is out of my range so I'm betting I never own one, but it's a nice card to look at.

Congratulations Kevin Kolb!

YEAH!!! Kevin Kolb was picked 36th in the NFL draft. I am so excited for him. Unfortunately he went to the Philadelphia Eagles. Since I'm a lifelong fan of the Dallas Cowboys, I'll have a very difficult time cheering for his team, but I hope he has great individual success.

In honor of Kevin being drafted, let's start this blog off with the 2007 Press Pass Autographed Kevin Kolb card. There are several variations of this card. There is the base, non-numbered edition. There are also limited silver and gold editions. In addition to the card variations, there are several signature variations. I've seen just a signature in either blue or red ink. There are also versions with Go Coogs! and his name, Go Coogs! and #4, and CUSA Champs and #4. There may be other variations.
